About WongPhai
WongPhai is a sustainability solutions partner, rooted in the foundations and spirit of bamboo, enabling a circular agricultural value chain by harnessing biochar as a zero-waste solution.
Pilot with Kingdom Organic
This pilot used 8 tonnes of biochar on organic farms with Kingdom Organic Thailand to improve the soil and yields for the farmers.
With guidance from a Suranaree University of Technology professor, WongPhai designed an experiment applying varying biochars, fertilisers, and water levels to kaffir limes. Monthly monitoring is conducted using sensors, while nutrient and water absorption data are analysed using Synchrotron machine to assess biochar’s impact on plant health and soil performance.
Key Highlights
- Achieved a reduction in water usage ranging from 30% to 65%, resulting in increased leaf and root biomass in kaffir lime plants.
- Decreased organic fertiliser usage by 25% to 50%.
- Increased soil carbon sequestration by 0.89 tonnes of carbon per hectare per year under the biochar and 25% fertiliser treatment.
- Increased significant mineral in plant leaf tissue despite stable soil nitrogen levels given short experimental duration: potassium (20% to 66%), iron (20% to 50%), manganese (33% to 80%), sulfur (over 50%), copper (over 22%), and zinc (13%).
