2025: A Milestone Year for SMEs — and the Power of Moving Forward Together

2025 was not just another year of adjustment for many SMEs. It marked a turning point – a year where digitalisation, artificial intelligence, and sustainability shifted from long-term aspirations to immediate business priorities. Business owners across industries moved from asking why these changes matter to how they can act with confidence, clarity, and control.

This shift reflects broader economic realities. The IMDA’s Singapore Digital Economy (SGDE) Report 2025 showed that Singapore’s digital economy grew by S$12 billion in 2024, reaching S$128.1 billion – or 18.6% of national GDP, up from 18.0% the year before. Crucially, more than two-thirds of Singapore’s digital economy came from non-ICT sectors, underscoring that digitalisation is no longer driven by technology firms alone, but by enterprises across finance, manufacturing, trade, and services.

For UOB FinLab, 2025 was a milestone year for the same reason. It was a year of strong progress, reflection, and celebration – not just of what we have built over the past decade, but of how far the SME ecosystem has come, and where it is heading next.

Ten Years On: From Innovation to Enablement

One insight stood out clearly as UOB FinLab marked its 10th anniversary in 2025: innovation only creates impact when businesses are equipped to adopt it.

What began in 2015 as a FinTech-focused initiative has evolved into a regional platform supporting SMEs across industries and markets. Over the years, our role has expanded from accelerating startups to enabling everyday businesses to digitalise, strengthen capabilities, and build resilience in an increasingly complex environment.

The 10-year milestone was not simply a moment to look back. It reaffirmed a belief that continues to guide our work today: SMEs thrive when they are supported by the right ecosystem – one that combines technology, skills, mentorship, and community. That belief shaped our focus in 2025 and continues to guide how we move forward into 2026.

A New Chapter in Skills and Capability Building

One of the most significant developments in 2025 was UOB’s appointment as a SkillsFuture Queen Bee (SFQB). Through this role, UOB FinLab was entrusted to support SMEs not only with solutions, but with skills, learning pathways, and long-term capability building.

This responsibility comes at a critical moment. IMDA revealed that 95.1% of SMEs have adopted at least one digital area, and SMEs now use an average of 2.3 digital areas, up from 2.0 in 2023. Adoption is deepening, but as digital tools become more embedded in daily operations, SMEs increasingly need guidance to translate adoption into sustained capability.

The launch of the SME Elevate Programme under the SFQB framework reflected a shift in how transformation happens. What SMEs truly need is structured support that helps them build confidence over time – through training, targeted advisory, mentorship, and peer learning.

The programme focuses on three critical pillars shaping SME competitiveness today: AI, digitalisation, and sustainability. More importantly, it reinforces the idea that upskilling is most effective when businesses learn together, guided by practitioners who understand real operational constraints.

Making AI Real: From Curiosity to Capability

2025 also saw the official launch of the UOB FinLab AI Ready Programme, a milestone that addressed one of the most pressing challenges SMEs face today: knowing where and how to begin with AI.

Interest in AI has surged, but adoption remains uneven. The SGDE Report 2025 showed that AI adoption among SMEs tripled in one year, rising from 4.2% in 2023 to 14.5% in 2024, yet overall AI integration remains limited. Concerns around cost, data readiness, and return on investment continue to slow progress. The AI Ready Programme was designed to close that gap.

Launched in July 2025 in collaboration with AI Singapore, IMDA, and Microsoft, the programme brought together SME leaders, ecosystem partners, and government agencies to demonstrate that AI adoption is achievable, practical, and scalable. Participants learned how to apply AI to specific workflows that matter to their business through hands-on clinics, expert advisory, and real-world use cases.

The returns are tangible. IMDA data showed that SMEs adopting AI-enabled solutions under the Productivity Solutions Grant (PSG) achieved average cost savings of 52%, while those implementing AI-powered cybersecurity solutions saw savings rise to 71%. These outcomes reinforce an important truth: SMEs adopt AI more successfully when a trusted ecosystem provides guidance, shared learning, and access to expertise at every stage.

Sustainability as a Business Capability

Sustainability remained a key priority in 2025 as regulatory expectations, customer demands, and cost pressures continued to evolve. Yet for many SMEs, sustainability still feels complex and difficult to operationalise.

A 2025 study by the Centre for Impact Investing and Practices (CIIP), based on a survey of over 3,500 MSMEs across Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam, found that 39% associate sustainability adoption with cost reduction and long-term efficiency, while 27% see it as critical to attracting and retaining talent. At the same time, the UOB Business Outlook Study 2025 highlighted a growing trend: 41% of SMEs view sustainability adoption as a strategic gateway to working with MNCs that are increasingly prioritising ESG-compliant supply chains.

UOB FinLab focused on helping SMEs move from intention to execution through the Sustainability Innovation Programme (SIP). The programme equipped business leaders with practical tools and frameworks across sustainability reporting, carbon management, zero-waste strategies, and access to funding for green transformation.

As part of the SME Elevate Programme, SIP positioned sustainability not as a compliance exercise, but as a core business capability – one that supports long-term resilience, competitiveness, and growth. SMEs can integrate sustainability into daily operations without overwhelming their teams with the right mentorship and peer learning.

Why Community and Mentorship Matter More Than Ever

One theme consistently stood out in 2025 across all these initiatives: SMEs learn and grow faster when they are not alone.

A separate pulse survey by IMDA of individuals revealed that nearly three in four workers (73.8%) now use AI tools at work, with 85% reporting improvements in productivity and work quality. More than two-thirds of AI-adopting firms also plan to prioritise training and upskilling in the next one to two years, reinforcing the importance of learning environments that combine structure with peer exchange.

Peer learning, mentorship, and partnerships have become defining strengths of the UOB FinLab ecosystem. SMEs benefit from learning alongside others facing similar challenges through our programmes, where they can share the latest market insights, mistakes, and practical solutions.

This community-led approach reinforces UOB FinLab’s role as a Queen Bee: connecting businesses to the right people, resources, and opportunities at the right time. In a fast-changing landscape, this sense of shared progress matters more than ever.

Looking Ahead to 2026: Building What Comes Next

As we look to 2026, UOB FinLab will continue to deepen its focus on capability building through community. SMEs can expect closer collaborations with Institutes of Higher Learning, including upcoming programmes such as AI and Machine Learning Begins with Me (NUS), data analytics courses with NTU, and new sustainability-focused initiatives launching in the year ahead.

These programmes reflect a consistent philosophy: transformation does not require radical change overnight. It starts with learning, supported by guidance and reinforced through practice.

Moving Forward, Together

2025 showed us what is possible when SMEs are empowered with the right tools, skills, and community. As we step into 2026, UOB FinLab remains committed to walking alongside businesses, helping them navigate change, build confidence, and grow with purpose.

Because the future does not belong to those who move fastest alone. It belongs to those who move forward together.
