SINGAPORE, Sep. 30, 2026 | Artificial intelligence is moving fast. New tools, models and capabilities emerge almost weekly, making it easy for businesses to feel pressured to keep up.

For many SMEs, the challenge is no longer understanding what AI is or why it matters. Instead, the real question is:
How do you turn AI awareness into measurable business value?

This shift was a key driver behind AI Ready 2.0, an enhanced programme by UOB FinLab designed to help businesses move beyond AI awareness towards adoption and implementation. Since its inception, the AI Ready Programme has supported more than 600 SMEs on their AI adoption journeys in Singapore, helping businesses move from curiosity to action.

Moving Beyond Awareness

When AI Ready was first launched, much of the focus was on helping businesses understand the possibilities of AI. Today, the landscape has evolved significantly.

Business leaders are increasingly aware of AI’s potential. Many have already experimented with tools and applications within their organisations. What they need now is support in implementation, scaling and achieving meaningful outcomes.

According to Shannon Lung, Senior Vice President and Head of UOB FinLab and Ecosystem Partnerships at UOB, the biggest barriers today are less about awareness and more about execution. Businesses often face challenges around data readiness, access to talent, and the capabilities required to successfully deploy AI solutions.

The organisations making the strongest progress tend to begin with a business challenge rather than a technology solution. Instead of asking, “How can we use AI?”, they ask, “What problem are we trying to solve?”

Where AI Is Making the Biggest Difference

Across the financial services and FinTech sectors, AI is already creating impact in several areas.

Businesses are using AI to deliver more personalised customer experiences, strengthen risk management processes and improve employee productivity. By equipping employees with faster access to insights and information, organisations can make more informed decisions and respond to customers more effectively.

As Lung puts it:

“AI will help people act earlier, help everyone serve their customer
            better, and make stronger decisions.”

Importantly, the goal is not to replace people.

          “It’s augmentation and not replacement.”

Human judgement, trust and accountability remain essential, with AI serving as a tool that enhances rather than substitutes human expertise.

What Happens If AI Development Slows?

Recent discussions around AI governance and regulation have prompted questions about whether global AI development may slow in the years ahead.

While some may view this as a setback, a slower pace of development could offer businesses valuable breathing room.

Rather than chasing every new model release, companies may have greater opportunity to focus on embedding AI into daily operations, strengthening governance frameworks and extracting more value from existing investments.

The businesses that succeed will not necessarily be those waiting for the latest breakthrough. Instead, they will be the ones that can translate today’s capabilities into sustainable business outcomes.

For SMEs still identifying the right use cases, this period can become an opportunity to engage employees, refine workflows and build adoption from the ground up.

The Next Step for Businesses

As AI continues to evolve, successful adoption will depend less on knowing what AI can do and more on knowing how to implement it effectively.

The journey starts with identifying real business challenges, engaging the people who will ultimately use the technology, and building the capabilities needed to scale solutions responsibly.

The conversation around AI may continue to change, but one principle remains constant: technology creates value only when businesses can put it into practice.

And increasingly, that is where the real opportunity lies.
