AI gender gap at work: Are women being left behind in Singapore’s AI push?

With Artificial Intelligence (AI) becoming more accessible and intuitive, more businesses are beginning to integrate AI into their business operations. This increase in AI adoption trend has reshaped what it means to navigate a tech product. Tasks that once required years of technical knowledge or specialized technical skills can now be translated into automation platforms, and AI-assisted workflows – unlocking key opportunities especially for women planning to enter the tech or digital economy.

The urgency is clear. Nineby9 reports a growing gender disparity in AI, highlighting a “double exposure” that women face: a higher likelihood of women being susceptible of losing jobs to automation, and becoming less represented in the AI workforce in the future. Without any strategic intervention, this inequality may exacerbate.

Navigating this, Ms Daphne Tay leverages on AI advancements to level the playing field. The former consultant recalled vibe coding a virtual game to draw attendees to her booth, what once was only possible by a developer or engineer. Today, she leads Bluente, an AI-powered translation that serves over 70 companies globally. Through her company, it has opened doors for more women, even those without technical backgrounds, to create and develop solutions in a fraction of the time.

Daphne spotlighted the meaningful support at UOB FinLab’s Women in Business Programme for female SME founders. She found a supportive community of women founders who shared similar challenges through the programme’s networking and knowledge-sharing initiatives. Overall, while she acknowledges the potential displacement effects of AI, she affirms that AI will unlock new opportunities for greater workflow efficiencies.
