The global business landscape is navigating a storm of macroeconomic challenges from rising energy costs and global supply disruptions. Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) often feel a larger pinch as they do not have as many resources as a large corporation. In fact, industry reports show that only 36% of SMEs feel confident in managing the ongoing volatility, compared to 78% of large firms. To protect their margins and overcome rising operational costs, SMEs are urged to continuously transform their business models and shift away from legacy systems. A central theme of this transformation is AI, which Prime Minister (PM) Lawrence Wong had boldly identified as “the defining technology of our time”.

Empowering SMEs for the AI Era

The technological urgency to integrate AI into core operations is accelerating rapidly as we step into the era of AI agents. In this new landscape, AI will not just improve productivity, but also disrupt and reshape entire industries. For SMEs, digital transformation is no longer optional, it is a critical evolution for business survival. To support businesses in this transition, government bodies have ramped up support. Initiatives like the AI for Enterprise Impact Playbook, introduced by SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) and Workforce Singapore (WSG), aim to help SMEs navigate the tech ecosystem and remain competitive in an increasingly automated economy. However, despite these robust national efforts, a critical implementation gap remains. According to the UOB Business Outlook Study 2026, while 65% of businesses have deployed AI to some degree, only 15% have successfully implemented advanced AI capabilities. This stark contrast reveals that most businesses remain stuck at an early stage of digital maturity, hindered by three critical roadblocks: gaps in data and system readiness (47%), a lack of funding availability (47%), and severe talent and capability constraints (39%). UOB FinLab bridges this exact gap, standing alongside the government to empower SMEs with actionable growth opportunities during this critical transformation. To help businesses overcome the hurdle of scaling AI, the UOB AI Ready Programme offers a practical, hands-on initiative tailored specifically for SMEs to harness AI’s transformative potential. Supported by key ecosystem partners including AI Singapore and IMDA, the programme directly removes barriers to entry and helps SMEs move seamlessly from awareness to action. Through expert-led masterclasses, access to plug-and-play AI solutions, and guided Proof-of-Concept (POC) sprints, we empower SME leaders to test and validate real-world AI use cases without the need for a complex in-house technical team.

As AI adoption accelerates, the workforce must be empowered to transition into higher-value, AI-augmented roles rather than facing displacement. This national commitment to inclusive growth was underscored during the 2026 May Day Rally, where PM Wong highlighted the critical role of “Queen Bee” industry leaders who extend their expertise to uplift standards and help their network of SME partners adopt new technologies.

Answering this call to strengthen the digital skills and business capabilities of SMEs across all sectors, UOB has been officially appointed as a SkillsFuture Queen Bee in 2025. The UOB SME Elevate Programme, part of the UOB SkillsFuture Queen Bee initiative by SkillsFuture Singapore, is designed to strengthen the skills and business capabilities of SMEs across all sectors.

At UOB FinLab, we believe that true digital transformation is fundamentally driven by people and thrives within a collaborative ecosystem. By joining the programme, SMEs can unlock a suite of powerful, targeted benefits:

  • Robust Community: Connect with over 33,000 enterprises, industry leaders, mentors and Institutes of Higher Learnings (IHLs) for partnerships, growth, and networking.
  • Dedicated Industry Mentorship: Receive one-to-one guidance from a dedicated skills manager, alongside access to insights and support from experienced industry leaders.
  • Tailored Training Pathways: Gain access to learning tracks focusing on AI, data analytics, digital marketing, and sustainability.

Heavily Subsidised Upskilling: Leverage up to 90% SkillsFuture funding for approved courses, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder innovation and growth.

Driving Foundational Growth and Stability

As our economy transforms at an unprecedented pace, it is inevitable that some jobs will change while others disappear. However, true foundational stability for businesses is rooted in human capital. Technology alone cannot solve severe macroeconomic pressures, it requires a workforce equipped with the agility and critical thinking to apply these advanced tools effectively.

To fully master advanced technologies, SMEs must establish a resilient baseline through digital adoption and workforce upskilling. This approach directly supports the national priority echoed during the 2026 May Day Rally: creating new, better jobs and keeping the promise to protect every worker. While the government provides the essential tools and pathways, UOB FinLab complements these efforts by offering programmes tailored to strengthen the foundational digital capabilities of SMEs.

SMEs are the undisputed core of Singapore’s economy, comprising 99% of all businesses and employing over 70% of the workforce. As highlighted at the 2026 May Day Rally, Singapore is moving into a disruptive phase of AI that is capable of independently planning and executing complex tasks from start to finish. The scale of this transformation means businesses can no longer afford to hunker down and wait for the economic storm to pass. Therefore, UOB Finlab continues to provide practical, heavily subsidised programmes dedicated to upskilling and reskilling SMEs and their workforce. Through initiatives like the AI Ready Programme, and UOB SME Elevate Programme, we ensure that SME workers are active, empowered participants in their company’s transformation. By providing the right ecosystem, mentorship, and practical solutions, UOB Finlab is shaping confident leaders ready to embrace the AI revolution and drive Singapore’s digital economy forward.
