Announcing Digitalisation Innovation Programme: Womenprenuer 2025
Announce D.I.P:W 2025 and cement UOB FinLab’s commitment to empowering female entrepreneurs.
UOB FinLab recently concluded its Sustainability Innovation Programme 2024 (SIP) that took place from 15 August to 26 September 2024. We are ecstatic to witness many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) take actionable steps towards their green transition – balancing environmental impact with profit and productivity.
The Sustainability Innovation Programme is a 5-week initiative to help SMEs to transform their companies into sustainable and green businesses. This year, the programme focused on three key pillars; Develop, Disclose and Decarbonise, and covers six key sustainability topics:
1. Energy Efficiency
2. Circular Economy and Waste Management
3. ESG Reporting and Disclosure
4. Solutions for Decarbonisation
5. Sustainability Grants and Support
6. Sustainable Finance
SMEs in Singapore and ASEAN are facing greater pressure to adopt sustainability practices from both consumers and regulators.
On the consumer front, there is an increasing demand for sustainable products with PwC’s 2024 Voice of the Consumer Survey stating that 85 per cent of consumers have experienced the disruptive impacts of climate change, leading to 46 per cent of them buying more sustainable products.
At the same time, regulators are tightening sustainability reporting measures with the Singapore Exchange extending their mandatory climate reporting to all listed companies in the materials and buildings, and transportation industries – increasing the number of industries from three to five in the previous year.
The complexities of changing consumer preferences and increasing regulatory requirements to go green have never been more challenging for SMEs and they often struggle with how and where to begin. UOB’s Business (SME and Large Enterprises) Outlook Study 2024 showed that 87 per cent of ASEAN companies view sustainability as important to their business, but only 44 per cent have adopted green practices. SMEs face significant barriers to implementation such as increased costs to customers, the impact it will have on their profits and the lack of proper infrastructure for renewable energy.
Tailored programmes such as SIP now play a crucial role for SMEs to achieve their sustainability goals by gaining access to industry experts and solutions providers.
In this year’s SIP, UOB FinLab united leading industry experts and solution providers to help SMEs get started and thrive in their sustainability journeys – opening access to a range of solutions and knowledge given by UOB Finlab’s more than 27,000 strong professional network through various sessions. This year’s sessions have been tailored to focus on areas that SMEs often struggle with — particularly when it comes to understanding ESG reporting, disclosure for green-financing and grants, and material assessment for net-zero and carbon-neutrality.
One highlight of this year’s programme was our collaboration with gprnt.ai, an integrated ESG data disclosure platform that enables SMEs to take advantage of their platform to disclose and report their ESG data.
SIP is tried and tested with 65% of participants from 2023’s cohort stating that the programme sparked the start of their ESG programmes. This year is no exception — 66% of participants completed their Gprnt disclosures and 56% of participants completed the UOB Sustainability Compass report. Having a customised report based on each businesses’ sector and sustainability maturity stage enables firms to kick start and/or fine tune their sustainability initiatives.
UOB FinLab programmes, including SIP, always stress the importance of building a diversified and professional network that can assist SMEs in attaining their sustainable objectives in all aspects – from expert knowledge, technology solutions, financial resources, industry partners, and more.
UOB FinLab will continue to empower SMEs in accelerating their sustainable journeys through tailored programmes and access to our vast network. SMEs are the backbone of many economies around the region and we believe they have the ability to make transformative progress towards a greener and more sustainable future.
